Key identification features

A pig sized animal with a massive body, arched back and powerful claws. Its head is long with very large ears and a long blunt pig like snout. It has a very long sticky tongue. HB 100-158 cm. Wt 40-82 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

It occurs in all regions where the soil is soft enough to dig in and where there are sufficient termites or ants to eat. Aardvarks are nocturnal and solitary. However, females are sometimes accompanied by one or two of their young.
