Key identification features

Resembles a small striped hyeana with a sloping back, a crest running from its shoulders to its tail, and a lightly tanned striped body. HB 55-80 cm. Wt 7-10 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

A strictly nocturnal and solitary species that feeds mostly on termites. Found in savannas and open bushland.

Similar species

Similar in appearance to the Striped hyaena, but much smaller – about jackal size.
