Olive baboon

Key identification features

A large, stocky, green-brown baboon with a gently sloping back. Males have a semi- developed mane on the shoulders. A large kink close to the base of the tail.  HB 50-100 cm. Tail 50-70 cm. Wt 12-22 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

Lives in large social groups of up to 100 individuals. Found in a wide range of habitats from dense forests to open savannas.

Similar species

The yellow baboon has lighter, yellow fur, and is taller and less thickset. Male yellow baboons lack a mane. A hybrid between the two species is found on the west and northern slopes of Kilimanjaro.
