Yellow baboon

Papio cynocephalus

Key identification features

A tall, slender baboon with yellow brown fur. Males do not have a prominent mane. Walks with a horizontal back posture. Has a large kink close to the base of the tail. HB 50-100 cm. Tail 50-70 cm. Wt 12-22 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

Found in large groups of up to 100 individuals of both sexes. Is found a broad range of habitats from forests to open savannas.

Similar species

The Olive baboon is stockier, has a gently sloping back, and the males have a mantle that is lacking in the yellow baboon. The Patas monkey has red fur and a white face.
