Bushpig
Potamochoerus porcus
Key identification features
A large reddish-brown or black pig with a white face and ears and a white stripe down the back. It has very small tusks that are barely visible. Height: 50 - 80 cm.
Habitat and social behaviour
Found in a large variety of habitats from forests to bushland, though is absent from open grassland areas. May be the most widely dispersed large mammal in Tanzania, as it is frequently associated with cultivation. It is largely nocturnal and seldom seen during the day, though easily seen at all hours at the staff camp in Ngorongoro.
Similar species
Warthogs are grey and hairless and have large tusks. Giant forest hogs are substantially larger and have large tusks. The two species are only likely to overlap in the very north west of the country.
