Key identification features

There are two sub-species of this monkey in Tanzania. The C. a. palliates sub-species which is found in the coastal areas, is mostly black with long white hairs on its shoulders, a white rump, and a bushy tail with a white tip. The other sub-species, adolfi-frederici, is also mostly black with white on the rump though with very little white on the shoulders, and tail that is mostly black and not bushy. HB 50-60 cm. Tail 65-80 cm. Wt 10-15kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

A social species found in large groups of 10 or more individuals. Diurnal and predominantly arboreal, found mostly in forest canopy.

Similar species

Abyssinian Black and White colobus has white on the sides. The Grey-cheeked mangabey can be confused with the adolfi-frederici ssp, but has a grey mantel and a more prominent crest.
