Key identification features

A very large, black ape, with short fur, no tail and pink or black skin on the face and hands. HB 90-160 cm. Wt 45-55 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

Lives in small groups of up to 20 individuals. Found predominantly in forests though less often in wooded savannas.

Similar species

Baboons are much smaller and have a long tail.
