Greater kudu

Tragelaphus strepsiceros

Key identification features

A very large, tawny brown or brown-grey antelope with white stripes on the body from the back to the belly. Males have large spiraled horns and a fringe of hair running down the neck. HB 190-230 cm. Wt 190-300 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

A social animal found in groups of up to 25 animals. Found in bushland and dense thicket.

Similar species

Lesser kudu males are much smaller and have a dark grey coat. Lesser kudu females generally have more white stripes on the body and have two white marks under the neck which are missing in Greater kudu.
