Large eared greater galago

Key identification features

A rabbit sized primate with a long very densely furred tail and very long naked movable ears (5-7.2 cm). Their woolly fur is a brown or grey colour. They are nocturnal and more often heard then seen. Their loud calls are a better guide for separating the various species then their appearance. HB 26-46.5 cm. Wt 0.6-2 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

The large eared greater galago lives in dense vegetation in Miombo coastal and montane areas. It is a nocturnal social animal that lives in small family groups but forages singly. They mark their territory with their loud cries and with scent.

Similar species

The Lesser and Dwarf galagos are much smaller. They have relatively very large eyes. The Greater galagos lack strong colour contrast on the body and face, while the Lesser galagos have dark eye masks and a pale nose stripes. The Small eared greater galago is a more active leaper, and has shorter ears and slightly bigger eyes compared to the Large eared and Silver galagos. The Silver greater galago looks very similar to the Large eared greater galago. The former has a smaller range, occurring only to the south and east of the Kavirondo gulf of Lake Victoria. The Large eared greater galago is more common and widespread.
