Key identification features
A rabbit sized primate with a long very densely furred tail and relatively short ears and big eyes. Their woolly fur is a brown or grey colour. They are nocturnal and more often heard then seen. Their loud calls are a better guide for separating the various species than their appearance. HB 23-34 cm. Wt 0.55-1.2 kg.
Habitat and social behaviour
Coastal and montane forest. Nocturnal social animal that live in small family groups but forages singly. They mark their territory with their loud cries and with scent.
Similar species
The Lesser and Dwarf galagos are much smaller. They have relatively very large eyes. The Greater galagos lack strong colour contrast on the body and face, while the Lesser galagos have dark eye masks and a pale nose stripes.
The Small eared greater galago is a more active leaper than the Silver greater and the Large eared galago which prefer walking and running though they can leap when cornered. The Small eared greater galago has shorter ears and slightly bigger eyes compared to the Large eared and Silver galagos.
