Key identification features
A cat sized carnivore with a long slender body and a pointy muzzle. It has a very long striped tail with a black tip. It has dark spots on its body, more often brown or chestnut then black. HB 40-55 cm. Wt 1.2-3.1 kg.
Habitat and social behaviour
It occurs in moist savannahs, bush, woodland, forest and cultivated areas. It is a nocturnal and solitary animal.
Similar species
The spots are larger and tend to be lighter in colour than the spots of the other genets. Ears are slightly rounder than the ears of the common genet and the tip of the tail is not white. The spots of the servaline genet are more angular and more closely grouped.
