African hedgehog

Atelerix albiventris

Key identification features

A small animal with short, sharp spines on its back from its head to its tail. White face and belly.

Rolls into a defensive prickly ball when disturbed. HB 15-20 cm. Wt 0.25-1.3 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

Nocturnal and solitary. Found primarily in dry, open habitats. Can be very common in urban areas.

Similar species

Porcupines are much larger.
