Coke's hartebeest (Kongoni)

Alcelaphus buselaphus cokii

Key identification features

A large antelope with a long, narrow face, a bony pedicel on the top of the skull, and a sloping back. Light tan colour with a white rump. Both sexes have horns that expand outwards at the base and then taper upwards and backwards. HB 175-255 cm. Wt 120-215 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

A grassland and open bushland species that lives in herds of 5 to 50+ animals.

Similar species

The Lichtenstein’s hartebeest has a larger neck, a brighter rufous back, and horns that do not curve outwards at the base, and have curve sharply backwards at the tip.
