Lichtenstein's hartebeest

Alcelaphus lichtensteinii

Key identification features

A large hartebeest with a chestnut back, tawny sides and white rump. It has a bony pedicel on the top of the skull, and a sloping back. Both sexes have horns that rise upwards at the base and then curve sharply backwards. HB 175- 255 cm. Wt 120-215 kg.  

Habitat and social behaviour

Associated with Miombo woodland. A social animal that lives in small herds with a single territorial male.

Similar species

The Kongoni is a lighter colour and has horns that expand outwards at the base and then taper upwards and backwards.
