Key identification features

A large, powerful hyaena with a sloping back, a thick neck and a massive head. Tawny brown coat with black spots. HB 120-180 cm. WT 60-80 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

A social species found in pairs or family groups of up to 25 individuals. Found in all habitats except dense forests.
