Key identification features

A large hyaena with a sloping back, long fur, and a well developed whitish mane extending from its shoulders to its tail. Body is white with black stripes. HB 100-135 cm. Wt 25-45 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

A solitary and predominantly nocturnal animal. Found in open savannas and bushland.

Similar species

Very similar in body shape and colour to the Aardwolf, though the striped hyaena is much larger (3-4 times the size).
