Impala

Aepyceros melampus

Key identification features

A slender antelope with a dark brown back, pale brown sides and a white belly. It has distinctive black markings on the back of the thighs and down the centre of the tail that form three vertical lines when seen from behind. The horns are long and curved backwards and the tips of the ears are black. Only the males have horns. Height: 80 - 93 cm.

Habitat and social behaviour

Found in large groups often in excess of 50 individuals in bushland or wooded grassland.

Similar species

Puku are a similar size, but are uniformly coloured.
