Black backed jackal

Canis mesomelas

Key identification features

A slender jackal with rufous underparts, and a black tail, nape and back, which is sometimes bordered by white fur. HB 70-90 cm. Wt 6.5-10 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

Often found in pairs in small family groups of 3-4 animals. Inhabits savannas, bushland and light woodland.

Similar species

Its black back distinguishes it from the golden jackal. Side-striped jackals have a white tail-tip.
