Key identification features
A large muscular, stocky spotted cat with short legs and a long tail. Has open rosette spots. HB120-150 cm. Wt 110- 165 kg.
Habitat and social behaviour
A largely solitary species. Inhabits a wide range of habitats from open savannas to dense forests. Can also occur in large urban areas.
Similar species
The leopard is stockier and has shorter legs than the cheetah. It also lacks the cheetahs distinct black facial markings. The cheetah has solid black spots.
