Grey cheeked mangabey

Key identification features

A large, black monkey with long grey hair on the shoulders, a long, semi-prehensile tail, and a prominent facial crest. Some individuals can appear almost entire black. HB 80cm. Tail 80-100 cm. Wt 10 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

They are generally found in small family groups of 4-12 individuals in forested areas, where they prefer the lower forest understory. A Congolese forest biome species.

Similar species

Most likely to be confused with the Angolan Black and White colobus, particularly the adolfi-frederici sub-species. The mangabey has grey on the shoulders and a longer tail.
