Key identification features
A medium sized mongoose with a short tapered tail with a blackish tip. It has a striped pattern on its back with dark transverse bands on a brown to grey ground colour. HB 30-45 cm. Wt 1.5-2.25 kg.
Habitat and social behaviour
It occurs in savannah, woodland and partly cultivated areas often in the vicinity of water. It is a diurnal and social mongoose that lives in packs of up to 40 members.
Similar species
The banded mongoose is the only mongoose with a striped pattern.
