Key identification features

A long legged cat with a relatively short tail – approximately 1/3rd the length of its body. Fur yellow with black spots. Melanistic individuals are common in montane areas of East Africa. HB 70-90 cm. T 25-35 cm. WT 8-17 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

Solitary, found in open savannas, bushland and montane grasslands.

Similar species

Caracal is a similar size and shape, but is a brown colour, lacks spots and has characteristic ear tufts.
