Thomson's gazelle

Gazella thomsoni

Key identification features

A small gazelle with a rufous brown back, a white belly and a prominent black stripe along its flank. Has a black and white stripe on the side of its face. Only males have horns. HB 90-110 cm. Wt 10-30 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

Open savannas. Found in small, dynamic groups ranging from 5 to over 100 individuals.

Similar species

The Grants gazelle is much larger, lacks the prominent black and white facial markings, and has a much less pronounced black side stripe.
