Burchell's zebra (Common zebra or Plains zebra)

Equus burchelli syn Equus quagga

Key identification features

A black and white striped horse like grazer. It has short legs, a rounded body, small ears and an erect mane. HB 190-245 cm. Wt 175-355 kg.

Habitat and social behaviour

Open and lightly wooded savannas. A social animal that lives in small harems but during the dry season they sometimes assemble in large herds. It often migrates together with other species, for example with blue wildebeest, hartebeest, giraffes, oryx and eland.

Similar species

The only zebra species occurring in Tanzania.
