Key identification features
A small mostly black carnivore with four prominent white stripes running from the nape to the long bushy tail. It has a slightly hunched back when it walks. HB 30-38 cm. Wt 0.7-1.7 kg.
Habitat and social behaviour
It occurs mostly in well grazed open country and is rarely found in forests and moist woodlands. It is a nocturnal and solitary animal. During the day it takes refuge in burrows. When annoyed or attacked it can eject a nauseating anal secretion.
Similar species
The striped weasel has a similar colour pattern but is smaller and longer, with shorter fur. The honey badger is much larger and does not have a striped back.
